The X-HUB TOKYO program hosted by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government aims at supporting the global activities of startups in Tokyo, stimulating the city's economy and creating innovation through interaction with globally active overseas startups.

In this Wrap-up Event, we are pleased to welcome Associate Professor Kanetaka M. Maki from Waseda Business School, who will provide a keynote speech titled "Leveraging the Global Ecosystem: Insights from Japan-U.S. Startup Research." Focusing on the theme of utilizing the global ecosystem, Professor Maki will discuss key points, significance, and appeal for Japanese startups seeking to expand internationally.
For the panel discussion, we will be joined by Mr. Yoshihiko Saito of Elephantech Inc. and Mr. Masaaki Hayashi of LIFESCAPES Inc., both selected for the “OUTBOUND PROGRAM,” which supports startups aiming to expand their businesses overseas through participation in overseas exhibitions and pitch events. We will also welcome Ms. Moe Kawai of Simplex Quantum Inc., selected for the “SCRUM PROGRAM,” which supports the acquisition of knowledge necessary for overseas expansion and exchanges with overseas startups and VCs.
Our guests will share their firsthand experiences participating in the X-HUB TOKYO program, discuss their efforts for overseas expansion, and talk about their future outlooks for going global.

We welcome not only startups, entrepreneurs, and students aiming to expand overseas, but also large companies, supporters and institutions who are interested in the trends of startups in Japan and overseas, and anyone who want to learn the know-how of expanding overseas!

Maki obtained a PhD in Management from the University of California San Diego in 2015. He has served as a Visiting Associate Professor at Stanford University’s Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, a Visiting Associate Professor at the UC San Diego Rady School of Management, a Visiting Associate Professor at Keio University’s Faculty of Science and Engineering, and a Visiting Professor at Kochi University. He is engaged in fostering talent in STEM and medical fields at universities in Japan and the United States and creating ecosystems centered around universities. His specialties include technology management, entrepreneurship, innovation, and science and technology policy. He participates in various roles, including as a member of the Innovation Subcommittee of the Industrial Structure Council of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, a member of the Planning Committee for the swift delivery of the latest pharmaceuticals to the public through enhanced drug discovery capabilities under the Cabinet Secretariat, a member of the Science to Startup Task Force of Keidanren, and an expert panel discussion on strategic survey and analysis capabilities under the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, deeply involved in Japan’s innovation policy. His recent works include “Management of Science and Technology for Innovators” (sole author, Toyo Keizai Inc.) and “25 Questions for Leapfrog Decision-Making Power through Scientific Thinking Training” (sole author, PHP Business New Book).

Joined Elephantech in 2017 and led the first successful mass adoption of metal inkjet-printed circuits. Now oversees the global promotion of SustainaCircuits, the company’s sustainable PCB solution. Previously, he held various roles in sales and marketing at Texas Instruments.

He completed the Doctoral Program at the Graduate School of Science and Technology, Keio University, and holds a Ph.D. in Science.
After completing the Master’s Program at the Graduate School of Science and Technology, Keio University, he joined DeNA Co., Ltd. as a new graduate. He worked in the healthcare domain, leading new business development, service planning, enterprise sales, and strategic alliances. While at DeNA, he earned his Ph.D. in Science from Keio University.
In July 2021, he joined LIFESCAPES to advance the social implementation of academic research.
He is currently a Researcher at the Faculty of Science and Technology, Keio University.

Moe Kawai joined Simplex Quantum, Inc. in May 2023 and currently serves as Global Communications Lead.
She has experience in R&D, product planning, and product marketing within the healthcare industry, and is responsible for marketing and business development initiatives in both domestic and international markets.
