Going Global: Startups’ Overseas Expansion Strategies and PracticesThe X-HUB TOKYO program hosted by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government aims at supporting the global activities of startups in Tokyo and stimulating the city's economy through interaction with globally active overseas startups.
Overseas expansion can bring significant benefits to startups, such as burgeoning markets, accessing expanded capital, and building a global brand. On the other hand, the situation around the world presents unprecedented challenges, with complex factors including geopolitical risks such as conflicts, and economic risks such as inflation and the depreciation of the Japanese yen. In this dynamic landscape, flexible strategy formulation and execution are essential for startups to flourish internationally.
In this Wrap-up Event, Prof. Iriyama Akie of Waseda University Business School will provide a keynote speech on the strategy of overseas expansion for startups under the title of "Management for Startups: New Common Sense of Global Strategy." Drawing on cutting-edge research and real-world insight, Prof. Iriyama will illuminate the path for Japanese startups to conquer the global stage.
The Presentation Session will feature startups that have participated in X-HUB's three key programs; the "OUTBOUND PROGRAM," an overseas expansion support program for startups in Tokyo, the "INBOUND PROGRAM," an expansion support program for overseas startups to Tokyo, and the "SCRUM PROGRAM," a support program for startups to acquire essential knowledge and skills necessary for overseas expansion. They will share the benefits and outcomes of the program.
In addition, in the Panel Discussion, more startups from the X-HUB program will share their firsthand experiences of overseas expansions.
Startups that are poised for global success will be speaking at this event.

X-HUB TOKYO, hosted by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, provides information to enter overseas markets, opportunities for networking, mentoring, and pitches with major companies and venture capitalists for Tokyo-based startups, and will support the creation of the new normal through interactions between overseas startups and local companies.
The INBOUND PROGRAM Pitch Event invites overseas startups from 2 domains (Mobility, CleanTech) with novel and unique products/services to pitch to our Japanese audience interested in collaborating with global startups.

Overcome the first hurdle to overseas expansionThe X-HUB TOKYO project, hosted by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, aims to support the global activities of startups in Tokyo and revitalize the economy of Tokyo while fostering a startup ecosystem through exchanges with startups from overseas that are active globally. The Overseas Expansion Seminar is composed of four sessions in total and is mainly targeted at startups aiming to expand their businesses overseas. Through the seminar, we will share the characteristics of ecosystems by area and the knowledge necessary for overseas expansion.
The #4 Overseas Expansion Seminar will provide information issues in the early stages of overseas expansion and share insights and real-life experiences of overseas expansion.
In the first half of the event, Mr. Tomoyuki Mizuno, COO of Creww, Inc. will be invited to share useful knowledge focusing on issues that many startups aiming to expand overseas face, such as "understanding local market trends and needs" and "developing and verifying business plans.
In the latter half of the event, Mr. Yusuke Asano, Founder and CEO of ONE ACT, Inc. who has experienced overseas expansion from the early stage of the company's establishment, and Mr. Takao Takahashi, CEO of Impact Circle Inc. will speak about the background of their startups' overseas expansion and how they overcame the difficulties they faced in their efforts to expand overseas, sharing their own experiences.

How to Succeed in New York
~Reality of Startup Expansion and Key to Success~The X-HUB TOKYO project, hosted by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, aims to support the global activities of startups in Tokyo and revitalize the economy of Tokyo while fostering a startup ecosystem through exchanges with startups from overseas that are active globally. The Overseas Expansion Seminar is composed of four sessions in total and is mainly targeted at startups aiming to expand their businesses overseas. Through the seminar, we will share the characteristics of ecosystems by area and the knowledge necessary for overseas expansion.
The #3 Overseas Expansion Seminar will provide information on the features and attractions of the New York market.
In the first half of the event, Mr. Daiki Nakajima, JETRO New York office, Director, will be invited to share an overview and characteristics of the startup ecosystem and the support available for expansion in New York.
In the latter half of the event, we will invite Mr. Taku Harada, CEO, Peatix Inc., to share his experience in expanding to New York, the secrets of success, and challenges he faced. In addition, Mr. Duncan Turner, General Partner, SOSV & Managing Director, HAX, will explain the methodology for expanding into New York.

European Expansion Strategy ~Successful expansion into London and European markets~The X-HUB TOKYO project, hosted by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, aims to support the global activities of startups in Tokyo and revitalize the economy of Tokyo while fostering a startup ecosystem through exchanges with startups from overseas that are active globally. The Overseas Expansion Seminar is composed of four sessions in total and is mainly targeted at startups aiming to expand their businesses overseas. Through the seminar, we will share the characteristics of ecosystems by area and the knowledge necessary for overseas expansion.
In the #2 Overseas Expansion Seminar, we will present the characteristics and charms of the London and European markets.
In the first half of the event, Mr. Kamimaeda Naoki, London Office Representative and Europe Division Head of Global Brain Co will be invited to share an overview and characteristics of each ecosystem.
This will be followed by a talk by a senior success company, Mr. Yoda Masaru, Member of the Board of Directors of INNOPHYS Corporation, who already has several sales offices in Europe and is willing to expand more. Mr. Yoda will talk about the reality of doing business in Europe.
In the latter half of the event, Ms. Yamamoto Chika, CEO & Managing Director of CROSSBIE GmbH, will explain the methodology and strategy for expanding into London and Europe.

Entering Asian Markets ~Overseas expansion to Singapore and Manila~The X-HUB TOKYO project, hosted by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, aims to support the global activities of startups in Tokyo and revitalize the economy of Tokyo while fostering a startup ecosystem through exchanges with startups from overseas that are active globally. The Overseas Expansion Seminar is composed of four sessions in total and is mainly targeted at startups aiming to expand their businesses overseas. Through the seminar, we will share the characteristics of ecosystems by area and the knowledge necessary for overseas expansion.
The #1 Overseas Expansion Seminar will provide information on the features and attractions of the Singapore and Manila markets.
In the first half of the event, Mr. Tan Fabian, Counsellor (Commercial) of Singapore Embassy in Tokyo and Regional Director of Northeast Asia and Oceania of Enterprise Singapore, and Mr. Akihiko Yoshida, Director of JETRO Manila Office, will be invited to share an overview and characteristics of each ecosystems and the support available for local expansion in each area.
In the latter half of the event, Mr. Takeshi Ebihara, Rebright Partners Pte Ltd., Founding General Partner, will explain the methodology for expanding into Singapore and Manila. This will be followed by a panel discussion with Mr. Yoshihisa Naganuma, CEO, ACALL Inc., and Mr. Tokushi Nakashima, President/CEO,Founder of Global Mobility Service Corporation, where Mr. Naganuma,and Mr. Nakashima will share their experiences, keys for success, and challenges they faced in expanding into the area.

X-HUB TOKYO Kickoff Event 2023
How Japanese startups can compete globallyThe X-HUB TOKYO project, hosted by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, aims to support the global activities of startups in Tokyo and revitalize the economy of Tokyo while fostering a startup ecosystem through exchanges with startups from overseas that are active globally. To promote open innovation between startups and large companies and to become a bridge between Japan and other countries, we are holding a variety of events, seminars, and accelerator programs that support startups in expanding their businesses overseas.
This kick-off event will include an overview of the project as a whole as well as seminars on the five essential criteria for Japanese startups to compete globally and the secrets to success globally.
In the first half of the event, Mr. Masayuki Tadokoro, CEO of Unicorn Farm, Inc., will give us a talk about the theme of "5 criteria for Japanese startups to compete globally," including the importance and attractiveness for Japanese startups aiming for overseas expansion from the initial stage with a global perspective and the key to success in the world.
In the latter half of the event, Mr. Taichi Yamaguchi, Managing Executive Officer CSO and General Manager of the LIMEX Sales Division of TBM CO., Ltd., which develops and manufactures the environmentally friendly material "LIMEX", Mr. Kenshi Yoshida, Head of the Overseas Business Affairs of AI Medical Services, Inc., which conducts, development and research on endoscopic AI, and Dr. Naomi Kurahara, Founder/CEO of Infostella Inc., a provider of Ground Segment as a Service (GSaaS) for orbiting satellites, will join us for a panel discussion on "The secrets of globally successful startups".
We look forward to welcoming not only startups interested in overseas expansion, entrepreneurs, and those who are in the concept stage, but also startup supporters and startup-supporting organizations.

Wrap-up Event
Strategy and Expansion for startups to gain Global CompetitivenessThe X-HUB TOKYO program hosted by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government is a project with the goal of supporting the global activities of startups within Tokyo as well as stimulating the city's economy through interaction with globally active overseas startups.
In the Wrap-up Event, Dr. Yukihiro Maru, Founder of Leave a Nest. Co., Ltd. and instigator of one of Asia's largest startup ecosystems who envisions to solve the world's social issues with deep-tech will provide keynote speech titled "The importance of expanding overseas and the reasons for foreign startups to enter Japan" on why startups should consider expanding abroad. Toshihiko Honkura, partner at i-nest capital, inc., will then give a speech titled "How to become a global startup" and speak on funding and business collaboration, founding branches overseas, and multinational HR management from VC’s perspective.
In the Achievement Session, startups that have taken part in the "OUTBOUND PROGRAM," an overseas expansion support program for startups in Tokyo, and the "INBOUND PROGRAM," an expansion support program for overseas startups in Tokyo, will present the benefits and outcome of the programs.

Open innovation required for large companies today
~New business creation with overseas startups~The X-HUB TOKYO project, sponsored by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, is providing the information for capturing overseas markets,as well as opportunities for networks, mentoring, and pitches with major companies and venture capitalists for Tokyo-based startups, and will support the creation of the new normal through interact between overseas startups and companies including startups in Tokyo.
The #5 seminar will focus on global open innovation by large companies in three areas: Life Science & Healthcare, CleaTech, and Mobility.
For each of these areas, a representative accelerator from each area will be invited to share an overview of the area and the latest information.
After that, the accelerator and a representative large company in that area will discuss the necessity of collaborating with startups and how to create new businesses that make an impact, while sharing examples from large companies.
We welcome participation not only from large companies, but also from startups, individuals and organizations interested in collaborating with large companies!

Learning from the world’s largest innovation city
~How startups can expand to “Silicon Valley”~The X-HUB TOKYO program hosted by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government is a project with the goal of supporting the global activities of startups within Tokyo as well as stimulating the city's economy through interaction with globally active overseas startups.
The Overseas Expansion Seminar is composed of five sessions total, and is targeted at startups aiming to expand their businesses overseas as well as members of supporting organizations that are considering collaboration with overseas startups. In these seminars, we will share (1) The characteristics of ecosystems by area, and (2) Knowledge necessary for overseas expansion.
#4 Overseas Expansion Seminar focuses on Silicon Valley. In the seminar, we present the characteristics and charms of Silicon Valley market.
In the first half of the event, Ms. Risa Ishii, Japanese Partnerships Director of Plug and Play Tech Center, will be invited to share an overview and the latest information of the ecosystems in Silicon Valley.
In addition, as a senior success company, Mr. Osamu Yamada, General Manager, Organization Strategy (Former Executive Vice President) of Cybozu, Inc., will be invited to talk about the reality of doing business in Silicon Valley.
Later in the event we will invite Mr. Takashi Kato, Partner and US Office Representative of Global Brain Corporation, to talk about the strategies that startups aiming to expand to Silicon Valley should know.
