The X-HUB TOKYO program hosted by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government aims at supporting the global activities of startups in Tokyo, stimulating the city's economy and creating innovation through interaction with globally active overseas startups.

Overseas expansion can bring significant benefits to startups, such as burgeoning markets, accessing expanded capital, and building a global brand. However, despite the fact that Japanese technology and ideas are globally recognized, the number of Japanese startups that succeed in the global market is still small compared to overseas startups. In order for Japan to achieve sustainable growth amid the declining birthrate and aging population and the maturing domestic market, it is essential to create global startups with a global perspective.
In this Wrap-up Event, Prof. Shigeo Kagami of the Graduate School of Engineering, the University of Tokyo, will provide a keynote speech on the necessity for Japanese Startups to aim for the world and points when considering the global stage under the title of "Creating Global Startups from Japan!" based on his experience in entrepreneurship education and venture support.
In the panel discussion, startups who actually utilized the OUTBOUND PROGRAM, which aims to expand their business overseas through participation in exhibitions and pitches held overseas, and the SCRUM PROGRAM, which supports the acquisition of knowledge necessary for overseas expansion and exchanges with overseas startups and VCs, will talk about their efforts for overseas expansion, their actual experiences of participating in the X-HUB program, and their prospects for future overseas expansion.

We welcome not only startups, entrepreneurs, and students aiming to expand overseas, but also large companies, supporters and institutions who are interested in the trends of startups in Japan and overseas, and anyone who want to learn the know-how of expanding overseas!

Dr. Kagami has been responsible for the development of the university startup ecosystem for the University of Tokyo since 2004 as a professor of Innovation and Entrepreneurship. Before joining the University of Tokyo, he worked with three professional firms: Boston Consulting Group, Corporate Directions (a founding partner), and Hedrick and Struggles (partner). Dr. Kagami graduated from Hitotsubashi University (Tokyo), earned his MBA from IMEDE (currently IMD Lausanne, Switzerland) and completed his doctoral work at Weatherhead School of Management, Case Western Reserve University (USA).
His publications include “Clusters of Innovation in the Age of Disruption”, Shigeo Kagami, Jerome S. Engel et al., 2022, Edward Elgar Publishing.
