X-HUB TOKYO Kickoff Event 2024
Changes in the environment surrounding Japanese startups and the future

The X-HUB TOKYO project, hosted by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, aims to support the global activities of startups in Tokyo and revitalize the economy of Tokyo while fostering a startup ecosystem through exchanges with startups from overseas that are active globally. To promote open innovation between startups and large companies and to become a bridge between Japan and other countries, we are holding a variety of events, seminars, and accelerator programs that support startups in expanding their businesses overseas.
At this kick-off event, we will hold a seminar to introduce an overview of the entire project, the situation and changes surrounding startups in Japan, and the importance of considering global business development from the beginning of the business.
In the first half of the event, Mr. Takaaki Umada,Director of FoundX, The University of Tokyo, will give us a talk about "The Future of Japan's Startup Ecosystem," including changes in the environment surrounding Japanese startups and the importance of aiming for overseas expansion with a global perspective from the initial stage.
In the latter half of the event, Mr. Satoshi Konagai, Executive Officer, COO and General Manager of Sales Division of Elephantech Inc., which develops printed electronics manufacturing technology that reduces environmental impact, and Mr. Fumitaka (Taka) Osumi, Director, COO and CFO of Mathmaji Co., Ltd., provides the global math learning app "Mathmaji," which incorporates Japanese-style math education, to the US market. Mr. Yu Sunada, CFO of Spider Labs, Inc., which develops the ad fraud prevention tool SpiderAFwill speak on "Why we have our eyes on the global market."
We look forward to welcoming not only startups interested in overseas expansion, entrepreneurs, and those who are in the concept stage, but also startup supporters and startup-supporting organizations.

Mr. Takaaki Umada
Director of FoundX, The University of Tokyo
Takaaki Umada is a director at FoundX, the official startup accelerator program at the prestigious University of Tokyo. With over a decade of experience supporting software developers and startup founders, Umada brings deep expertise in startup support, including navigating public affairs and regulatory matters.
Prior to his current role, Umada held positions at Microsoft Japan as a product manager and evangelist. In 2016, he transitioned to the University of Tokyo, where he founded and led Hongo Tech Garage before launching FoundX in 2019. He is the author of “Paradoxical Startup Thinking,” “Successful Entrepreneurs Choose Where to Stay,” “Implementing the Future,” “Raising Your Resolution.”

Satoshi started his career in management consulting at EY Strategy and Consulting Co., Ltd. in 2013, where he advised manufacturing companies on operational transformation and management system implementation.
In 2016, he joined Industrial Growth Platform Inc (IGPI), a Japanese management consulting firm, where he provided consulting services mainly to manufacturing companies.
In 2020, he conducted research on growth strategies of Japanese companies as a visiting researcher at Columbia University Business School.
He holds a Master’s degree in International and Development Economics from the Graduate School of Arts and Science, Yale University.
Joined Elephantech in 2021 and was appointed as COO and Executive Officer in 2022.
Mr. Fumitaka (Taka) Osumi

Taka worked as a fund manager at Deutsche Bank Group after graduation. He then joined establishing Teach for Japan(TFJ) as a fundraiser.
After TFJ, he studied social business at Yale School of Management as a Fulbright scholar. Post his MBA, he joined an AI startup and raised 4 billion JPY. He also established the corporate division and led the CEO’s Office as an executive officer.
Mr.Yu Sunada
CFO at Spider Labs, Inc.
Yu is a seasoned Finance and Strategy Executive, boasting a robust record of achievements, an MBA degree, and CPA certification. His career took root at KPMG, where he honed his skills providing audit and accounting advisory services to SEC and TSE prime listed companies. This foundation led to a strategic position as the Commercial Controller for the Asia Pacific region at a Fortune 500 FMCG company. Beyond his financial accomplishments, Yu expanded his leadership horizons as the CEO of a global software startup in Japan. Equipped with cross-functional expertise, Yu is primed to play a decisive role in driving exponential growth for any organization.
